In the deep depression that most call our first full year without a new Arrested Development, there has been an obvious lack of updates about our favorite Bluth: Michael. With the dust now settling, many of us are crawling out of our holes searching for signs of life of our beloved AD cast.

For example, Will Arnett has been very busy as many of may have seen him in Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell. However, a close watch on Jason Bateman over the past year has shown him just as busy, and doing quite well. It seems, and quite deservedly so, that AD boosted Jason’s reputation as a comedic genius to new levels.

Shortly after the closing of AD Jason starred as Riggleman in The Break-Up. If you were to walk the New-Release wall at your local Blockbuster, you would find Jason Bateman as the second name billed on the movie Smokin’ Aces starring as Rip Reed.

The near future only shows more of the same for Jason. He stars as Zach Braff’s rival, Chip Sanders, in the new comedy The Ex, to be released on May 11. We all hope this movie helps to establish Jason as A-list comedian on the big-screen, so please go and see this movie. Feel free to watch the trailor for the movie at:
http://www.myspace.com/zachbraff
The part does, indeed, look perfect for Jason.

Also upcoming is a starring role in The Kingdom opposite Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell; a thriller slated to release on Sept. 28th. Other films include Tonight He Comes with Will Smith, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium with Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman (to be released in November) and Paperman still in production without official release dates. Perhaps the most exciting news, though, is his role in the drama Juno. Without a release date as of yet, anticipation builds, as he will be starring alongside former AD co-star Michael Cera. With that being closest we have gotten to an AD reunion OR movie, I ask that you keep the possibility of an Arrested Development major motion picture in your prayers.

Wonderful News-- Jason announced last week on LA radio station Star 98.7 that his wife, Amanda Anka, is 5 ½ months pregnant! We at the Jason Bateman Fan Site send Jason and his wife all our congratulations and best wishes!!

I’m sorry that I’ve been neglecting the updates a bit…I had to take a bit of a break after AD’s cancellation….so, so devastating. Jason is working on a number of different projects with a bunch of fantastic actors, and is appearing in the Break Up right now—he’s hilarious, so go see it! Jason has finished working on “Fast Track,” with Amanda Peet and Zach Braff, slated for release in 2006, and is currently working on “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” with Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman and “The Kingdom” with Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, and Jennifer Garner. We can’t wait to see all these movies!!

Devastating news today…..
Yesterday, FOX announced that it would be both pulling Arrested Development for the remainder of November sweeps and cutting its episode order down from 22 episodes to 13. Although FOX has remained mute on the issue of cancellation, Reuters used the “c” word in its report this morning, claiming that AD “is headed for the exit after Fox cut the third-season order on the Emmy-winning comedy to 13 episodes.” This morning, Kristin Veitch over at E! posted in the “Watch With Kristin” forums that she’d received an email from Jason regarding the cancellation rumors. Here’s a bit from Kristen’s post :
This morning, I emailed Jason to ask if the cancellation rumors are true, and he wrote back to say:

"We're not getting a full season. It will be 13 only ... Everyone is pretty upbeat about it, actually. The last thing we wanted to happen was to overstay our welcome and tarnish the experience and prestige of the show.
It was a great run and it's great that the network didn't cancel us outright, and they're letting us do 5 more where we can wrap up a lot of story arcs."

Jason also told me via batphone that though nothing is official, the "writing is pretty much on the wall," and it would "be a complete shock if it was picked up for another year." But, also, "it was a shock that we got any more episodes than the pilot. It's been great for all of us, and we're really fortunate for the two and a half years we've had."

So, as much as it literally pains me to have to write this, it looks like Arrested Development is finished on FOX. Fans are hopeful that another network will pick up the show, but right now nothing is clear. Fans should keep up with the forums over at The-OP and TwOP because if plans for another grassroots fan effort are developed, it will definitely be at these places. Fans that want to write a strongly worded letter to FOX( and who can blame you) should visit Save Our Bluths for all of the relevant addresses. Our hearts are broken here for the entire cast and crew of Arrested Development and all of the fantastic fans of the show. We want to tell Jason how very much we love and support him, and that we have the greatest faith that his career will continue to climb despite the idiocy of FOX and the general viewing public. For now, though, nobody can deny that this is an overwhelming loss….

Fantastic news today for Jason Bateman and “Arrested Development” fans—FOX officially announced that Arrested Development will return for a third season! Here’s what FOX President Peter Liguori had to say about his renewal decision: "Arrested Development is one of the best comedies on television. The decision to order another season becomes easy when you consider its amazing cast, creative brilliance, critical acclaim and advertiser appeal. It's my first official pick-up since taking the job, and I think it's a great way to start." We here at The Jason Bateman Fan Site would like to thank Mr. Liguori for his support of the best show on television and recognize the amazing efforts made over at SaveourBluths.com to ensure Arrested Development’s renewal—television just wouldn’t be the same without Michael Bluth. Congratulations to the cast and crew for getting the recognition that they deserve!

3/28/05

Jason Bateman will appear on IFC’s “Dinner for Five” on Friday April 8th at 10 PM. The other guests that night will be Jeffrey Tambor (yay!), Tracy Morgan, and Bonnie Hunt. “Dinner for Five” is a really laid-back show, and it should be a great forum for Jason’s (as well as Jeffrey’s) hilarious sense of humor. Don’t miss it!

3/22/05

Jason Bateman has signed on to star in “The Heartbreak Kid” with SNL star (and wife of Will Arnett) Amy Poehler for Dreamworks Pictures. The plot centers around Jason’s character, who marries Poehler too quicky and subsequently meets the girl of his dreams on their honeymoon. The screenplay will be based on the original 1972 version of the film and will be penned by Scott Armstrong (Old School) and Leslie Dixon (Mrs. Doubtfire). “The Heartbreak Kid” will be directed by James Bobin of “Da Ali G Show” and is expected to go into pre-production immediately. Congratulations Jason—we’re waiting with baited breath!

Still upset about the episode reduction? I know I am. Although Arrested Development has not been cancelled, it’s important for all the Jason Bateman and AD fans to realize that “not cancelled” does not necessarily mean “renewed.” There is much that the fans can do, and I’d like to address your attention to www.saveourbluths.com. This website is an extension of The-OP and deals entirely with the continuing effort to keep AD on the air. Here you’ll find ways to talk up the show, such as AD avatars, buddy icons, and t-shirts. There are also forums to coordinate publicity events with AD fans in your area (such as the recent trip to TRL) and a ton of graphical resources to further promote the show. Arrested Development returns this Sunday, 3/6/05, with TWO new episodes guest starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and if you are among the many who feel that FOX is not doing everything in its power to promote the show, visit SaveOurBluths and use their flyers to promote AD yourself! Please help your fellow fans in helping to ensure that Jason and the cast of Arrested Development stay on the air for years to come.

A rather unfortunate day in the news for our beloved Bluths. Fox has reduced the episode order for Arrested Development this season, which means we’ll be getting 18 episodes rather than the standard 22. Starting May 1 the new animated series “American Dad” will be in AD’s timeslot. There’s been lots of nasty rumors abounding about cancellation, but from what I’ve read this is not the case—this should be taken as a warning, though, that Arrested Development may be in danger. There a number of things that can be done, including contacting Fox to show your support and/or participating in the fundraiser being run over at The-op.com. The editor at The-op has organized a publicity event which includes sending 500 custom-printed banana stress balls over to the folks at Fox…make a donation over there, if you can…my broke-ass did. Once again, the show is NOT cancelled, but we need to mobilize!

 Jason and Arrested Development each received a Golden Globe nomination this morning!! The breakdown of actors nominated as leading actor in a musical or comedy is as follows :
-Jason Bateman, “Arrested Development”
-Zach Braff, “Scrubs”
-Larry David, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
-Matt LeBlanc, “Joey”
-Tony Shaloub, “Monk”
-Charlie Sheen, “Two and a Half Men”
Of course, I'm biased, but Jason seems to have a great shot at picking up this award. Note that both Tony Shaloub and Charlie Sheen have already won golden globes, and I’m just going to keep remarks about Matt LeBlanc’s performance on “Joey” to myself. Congratulations, Jason!
The breakdown of shows nominated as best musical or comedy is as follows:
-“Arrested Development,” Fox
-“Desperate Housewives,”ABC
-“Entourage,” HBO
-“Sex and the City,”HBO
-“Will and Grace,”NBC
“Arrested Development” was snubbed at the Golden Globes last year, so hopefully they’ll pick one up this year. Congratulations to the cast and crew for the well-deserved nomination!!!

 “Arrested Development” episode number 206, “afternoon delight,” will air on December 19th and was directed by Jason himself! Jason is the only cast member that has directed an episode, and directing has been one of Jason’s overarching career goals. Dailies can be seen at the official fox site, and will surely soon be added to the excellent The-Op.com.
